Ryan Downey (Feature Artist)
Each week at Small Time, we collaborate with a local artist to showcase their music, merch and host a live performance.
A TON OF COLOURS is the luminous new art rock offering from Melbourne’s Ryan Downey, an album that pulsates with love and curiosity. Out May 14 on Dot Dash Recordings (home to Methyl Ethyl, Donny Benét, Banoffee), Downey says this is “an album about humanness – its beauty, its contradictions and our desire for connection.”
At the forefront of the record is Downey’s breathtaking voice – a rich baritone with a dramatic range that can shift from a rumbling purr up to a vulnerable crescendo. He enlisted award-winning Canadian-Australian producer Burke Reid (Julia Jacklin, Courtney Barnett) for this record, who brought a saturated, electrifying heft to the production, that hits deep and is genuinely emotional, saluting recent re-defining guitar records by artists like Big Thief and Anna Calvi.
Following tours nationally and abroad, with artists like Marlon Williams, Sarah Blasko, Emma Louise and Tiny Ruins, sold out headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and performances at Falls Festival, MONA, BIGSOUND and The Melbourne Recital Centre, A TON OF COLOURS is the first full-length release since Downey’s 2018 Australian Music Prize nominated Running.
